Design of Complex Engineered Systems

AIEDAM Special Issue, Fall 2014, Vol.28, No.4

Guest Editors: Irem Y. Tumer and Kemper Lewis

Design of Complex Engineered Systems is a research area that focuses on systematic and rigorous approaches to designing and analyzing large-scale engineering systems. Complexity comes from the fact that these systems are not only large-scale, but also include multiple disciplines, and are composed of hardware, software, and at times humans, which typically results in unmodelled and poorly understood interactions and behavior at multiple scales. Such behavior often leads to unintended consequences that plague engineering organizations developing such systems, including cost overruns, schedule delays, unplanned maintenance, and ultimately, catastrophic failures during operation. Current systems engineering processes do not guarantee safe, effective, and robust systems that are delivered on-time and within budget. Over the last 5 years, the engineering design research community has recognized this problem and advances have been made in many research groups with real large-scale applications. Furthermore, government organizations including NSF, NASA, and DARPA have created new programs that specifically fund the scientific approaches needed to make a significant impact in the state-of-the-art. As a result, this special issue is very timely in that many of the approaches are ready to be disseminated and shared with our peers. The guest editors intend to showcase the variety of the research in this field.

Contributions can be 8-12 pages long in the AI EDAM format. A paper with a length of 6200-9200 words (include all figures, tables, and refs) may fit that range.

Review, feedback and discussion:

Authors are invited to submit names of suitable reviewers, such that discussions aimed at developing the paper may be integrated in the review phase.

All submissions will be anonymously reviewed by at least three reviewers. The selection for publication will be made on the basis of these reviews.

Information about the format and style required for AIEDAM papers can be found here.

Inquiries about this special issue should be sent to the Guest Editors.

Please submit your paper through ScholarOne system online at: Your need to create an user account first if you are a new user. During your submission process, pay attention to the following two steps:

  • On Step 1 (Type, title & abstract): Select "Yes" for the "Special Issue" question.
  • On Step 5 (Details & comments): Select "Design of Complex Engineered Systems - Vol.28/4" for "Special Issue Name".
